I know that, but Maximus isn't a real Roman figure. Commodus, Marcus Aurelius, Quintus, Cicero, (Gracchus and Gaius are just a mix-up between Gaius Gracchus), and others are based on real Roman figures though.

The dog in the beginning was a real figure too... though... he wasn't really all that cool 😎. In reality he just served the emperor his lunch.

So not trying to offend anybody, but imo, they were bad. I mean, as a lover of the books, I am probably biased. But some parts were good. Most of the battle scenes were fine, but (sorry Op) my least favorite was the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Just compared to the books. Peter Jackson made some poor choices making them, such as the addition of extreme drama. That really put me off them. I mean, as movies, they might be fine, but being compared to the books, I feel that they are lacking. But, they have some good memes come out of them, so that’s always fun.

My favorite was probably FotR. It stuck to the book for the most part, and I enjoyed it. Two Towers was...ehhhh....The Return of the King was good, but a bit long.

MB: Well, I agree with everything you said. Except that it made the movies bad. I loved 'em. The Extended Editions are supposed to have a lot more book-accurate scenes and lines.

@MrBrick I think we all can understand that, but it doesn't make the movies bad. Films and books are very different things... and you just can do them the same. I think actually one reason old literature is often so much better than modern literature, is that modern writers might sometimes be trying to write their books like movies... which isn't wrong... but I'd rather my book be written like a book, and my movie like a movie 😂

@Op: I'm not bothered when movies make deviations from the book, only when said deviations are unnecessary and pointless.

Movies can never be the same as the book, they always have to change things. But it does get super annoying when, as Gman said, the changes are useless. There are rare occasions when the movies are an improvement.

G-man: Yeah, I'd agree. But, for peace's sake, I'm not gonna mention that I think that some of the changes they made were beneficial.

Greenie: Yes! You're so right! I usually really dislike it when authors try to do that! I mean, sometimes it works out well (Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel!), but it usually just makes it very cheesy and, dare I say, cringy.

Also, I actually think the films made some, okay, I won't call them improvements... but if I had written the books I would have written some things more like how the movies present them. For example, the dwarfs in The Hobbit, especially Thorin, are 'better'... as well as the elves, less cherry and more serious. By better I mean I would have made them that way, personally...

@Greeny, I like the elves in The Hobbit book way better then the movie. In the film, they're cold and arrogant, and unwilling to help anyone but themselves. Same with the dwarfs. The Hobbit movies just ruined Dwarfs and Elves for me.

Oh, so we're talking movies versus books, huh?
Well, I agree with most of what's said. I will add that books are able to use all 5 (I know it's not entirely accurate, but bear with me) of our basic senses, while movies can really only do two effectively. That coupled with the necessary use of our imagination tends to make most books better than movies.

That being said, books that avoid dwelling mostly on character's thoughts (cough cough Harry Potter cough) have a lot of my respect.

And a short film that is much better than the section of book it's based off of is the Wingfeather Saga: A Crow for the Carriage... but A.P. was new to writing back then 😄

Anyway, the ultimate test of the quality of any story is the characters: if they are realistic and speak like real people, it's at the very least an enjoyable story - if they always state the obvious/pointless it can ruin even the best of story worlds and special effects. The Last Airbender is a good example of this 😉

That's my two cents anyway.
