After posting a comment on how outdated a Lego realism tutorial for Blender on YouTube was, I received the following response: "...said, mecabricks doesn't have an open source or creative commons license, so you can't use their stuff in much outside of just renders, especially not for commercial use" -rioforce. Is this true?
Yes. You accepted these conditions the first time you exported a model from the workshop.
Okay. I wasn't sure if that was true since I did not remember seeing anything for that.
Does commercial use apply only if you are making money from it? Or is using it for public projects also prohibited?
This is more to protect the 3D and decoration files.
For example, making an animation and posting it on Youtube or displaying your renders on flickr are permitted.
However, you cannot create another LEGO building software that would re-use files exported from the workshop or sell these files on platforms like turbosquid.
To summarise, free public projects where the 3D files are not redistributed are allowed without asking for permission.
I see, thank you for clarifying!
Would animations using MB models be allowed to have monetization enabled on YouTube? I've wondered this for some time, but never got around to asking about it. 😛
Yes, if Mecabricks is mentioned.
This clears things up. I was really beginning to worry because I have some Lego animations (with models from Mecabricks) on YouTube. That makes complete sense why you want to protect the models and decorations, Scrubs.
Awesome! Thanks! 😃
@Masman8675 Have you made any Lego animations in Blender? (I wasn't sure since you were asking about monetizing YouTube videos in the topic)
Nothing is up yet, but I have one I'm working on and another possible idea. (Which is currently somewhat secret, I don't want anyone stealing my idea.) PM me if you'd like to know more about the in-progress, so as to not spam this thread. 😉
What if I build something in Mechabricks and export it to cinema 4d and render it for use in a commercial animation project, which would be subject to Lego's approval on the end result. Would that be allowable to use Mechabricks?
@markjo Not without MB approval. Please send me an email if you wish to discuss further.
Two more questions on commercial use:
Hello Kirschilan yes this is a commercial use if Mecabricks is part of a paid activity. You can get in touch privately with me if you want to discuss further.
Hello, I have a question about the copyrights, I'm using lego for designing a robot for my thesis at the university. It's not for commercial reasons, just educational reasons. I used Mecabricks to design the robot and I'm using screenshots of the robot in my thesis. Is such thing prohibited? I'm mentioning that I used mecabricks for the design and I will definitely cite the website.
@aabedsolayman All good. No problem with this.
Would i be able to sell it if I added my own things to it? Or if i painted on it?
@HockeyShark58 No. The use of any Mecabricks assets in any commercial work is not allowed by the standard license.
@scrubs is it ok to screenshot the workshop, step by step, to create a set of MOC instructions? Tedious process but for myself, the only way I can think to make instructions (as I use an iPad)
