Bricklink Stud.io: A new competitor to Mecabricks

Stud.io is a new LEGO CAD program being developed by Bricklink. It looks like it could possibly become the best ever. I just wanted the Mecabricks community to know about this interesting new development. Mecabricks still has the upper hand for me in its portability and the fact that I don't have to boot up my archaic Mac to play with a few imaginary LEGO bricks, but who knows where Stud.io might go... the App Store? Nothing about the article suggested it to me, but it's certainly possible...

What do you think? Where will it rank? Will it App? Will it even work? Let me know.

Hello,

It doesn't really look like a mecabricks competitor but another ldraw desktop software like ldcad or mlcad.
I think it is actually just a re-packaging of their old software MOC Builder which didn't really have any success from the best of my knowledge.

I've signed up, lets see if I get selected to have a look at it. But to me it also looks like an application that runs above LDraw. I'm looking forward to use their building instruction generator.

@Scrubs It's only really a competitor like how LDD and Ldraw are, but I didn't know how else to word it without sounding like an advertisement.

@Sim Hopefully it works better than Ldraw or LDD's instructions.

No problem. I am also looking forward to see what it will look like. It is hard to get an idea with just a couple of screenshots.
I also think that their goal is different. They want to attract people who want to build their models IRL as it is how they generate their profit.

Let see what a Korean billionaire can produce!

Anyway, I don't have any of the resources that those companies have:
LDD -> LEGO
stud.io -> Bricklink and Jay Kim Jung Ju

So I will just continue to follow my development plan 😉

@Scrubs Mecabricks proves you don't have to have immense amounts of funds to make a good product: I only use LDD to move files from LDraw (crowdsourced) to Mecabricks (one guy with a dream and good programming skills) any more. Who knows; I don't expect Stud.io to replace this any time soon, although it's buying parts deal is very attractive... getting the parts list for my "Tessie Mk 2" model into Bricklink was a real pain in the neck... two months later I was still finding missing parts. Maybe once it comes out you could code an exporter to Stud.io, if it is possible.

Happy belated Halloween, by the way.

Still waiting for an invitation to get started with it. Some builders have been accepted already and have mentioned that it uses LDraw.

Got an invation today and the bricklink web part is for sure copied from Mecabricks. 😛 Same style, same features (although they also have a neat building instruction generator) and the best, the same icons.

Wow... way to go, Bricklink. Original content.

Do you have a screenshot?

You'd think they could come up with their own icons, they have funds...

At least they changed "Inventory" for "Parts list" 😛
Is the web part open to everybody or do you need an invite to access it?

You need to apply for the closed beta and receive an invitation.

Huw from Brickset did a blog post about it: http://brickset.com/article/24920/building-with-stud-io

The section about the terms of service means that if I use it, I'm not gonna set my models to public, that's for sure...

It is bricklink. What do you expect... They tried but unfortunately it did not go through so easily this time 😉

@Masman8675 I was about to post that link... looks superior to LDD and LDraw, but I am not sure how it would compare to MB yet. The onboard renderer and simple instructions creation look very useful, but the dystopian ToS and intense CPU drain are kind of off-putting. My computer is too old to use it anyhow, which is sad, because I really wanted to try it. LDD is dumbed down, LDraw is tedious, and Mecabricks doesn't work very well on my computer, so this looked interesting. Oh well. Mecabricks on my iPad is still working just fine for me.

I have tested it as well. I haven't noticed anything about performance yet, but if we're going to compare it against LDD, then it's pretty much better. MB is equal in performance. The building instruction generator is a pro point. Nothing can beat the ease to set that up.
Stud.io is the combination of the best worlds (ldd, ldraw and mb) in my opinion. Although it still has big bugs, it's getting better fastly.

It is based on the LDraw part library which is from my point of view obsolete. I am not too sure how there will maintain it or if bricklink will contribute to LDraw.

I installed the MacOs version and played a bit with it. It is not really my thing even I noticed a couple of nice features. I did not try the instruction function yet.

To summarize, it has bugs everywhere and it uses a lot of resources. I have a core constantly between 20 and 30% even if nothing happens. Just to compare, Mecabricks is at 1 or 2% when idle. Pieces take a couple of seconds to go from the library to the scene... collision didn't work for most pieces I tried and snapping works only on certain angles of the camera. most of the time I could not snap where I wanted. Besides, UI is not made for Retina displays and looks terrible on my iMac screen.

The thing I kinda like is the easy use of pov-ray. Of course this render engine is completely outdated but It could allow people with really zero knowledge to make an image which is not too horrible - kinda 😉.

Yea, POV-Ray isn't my preference at all anymore. 😛 And don't worry Scrubs, I don't think I'll ever abandon Mecabricks. 😉 ...unless I die or something, which hopefully won't be for at least another 60-70 years. 😛
