I asked Scrubs a question like this and this is what he said:
"Rendering doesn't happen on your computer. The system sends the data to my rendering servers which generate the image before sending it back to your computer. I have to maintain my own renderfarm - maintenance, upgrades, electrical power, etc. which costs a lot of money, not mentioning the initial hardware purchase made of high end parts."

So when say he turns the power of, or something like that, (this is just an example) it would be offline. Hope this helps!
