How do you scale down design?

Probably a dumb question but my model is perfect, I just cant get it small enough to show in camera view. Maybe scaling isn't the issue?

Hi jayross-

In Mecabricks, there are two types of cameras in use, the viewport camera (the one that shows you the workspace) and cameras that you can add for renders. If you're having trouble with the viewport camera there really isn't much you can change except to zoom out more. This is done with the scroll wheel on the mouse or pinch to zoom on a touch screen/track pad. You can show the entire model by changing your View to Center on the top toolbar or by keyboard shortcut [Numpad .]. If the model disappears because you zoomed out so much then you can toggle your View from Perspective to Orthographic, same menu as before or [Numpad 5].

If you're talking about setting up a camera for render, you can move it around the workspace like any other part and there are also some settings in the Object tab that will help. Specifically, if you are having trouble fitting your model in frame, then you can move the camera back away from the model or switch to a wider field of view.

If you are already happy with how your camera is aimed but you just want to back it up a bit, you should be able to grab the arrow sticking out the back of it to drag it straight back. If your axis arrows are not aligned with the camera, switch your Transform Orientation from Global to Local on the top toolbar to align them with the camera.

Alternatively, you can select the camera and then adjust the Field of View setting in the Object Tab. This has the same effect as zooming in and out with a camera lens. If you want your model to feel bigger, a wider field of view and a closer camera position might be appropriate. If you find that closer objects keep blocking further back objects, then moving the camera back and selecting a narrower field of view may help.

Really appreciate the response and time you took to do it! What you are saying makes sense...I am just so new to this that although I am following your instructions, I still can't get the design to show up in the camera view 😦 I'm helping out a local sign shop who has a customer that wants their logo made out of legos, so that pressure isn't helping lol

Thanks for trying!

Sorry you're having trouble still... The big question is are you trying to zoom out and see the whole model in the viewport or did you add a camera and you can't get your model to show up there? Both of these have very different answers.

Added a camera and cant get my model to show up. I can see the whole model in the viewport at certain zoom distances.

Ok, this is good. I'm assuming you can see the model in camera initially, but when you back up enough the model disappears. There is a setting in the Object Tab called Clip End just below Clip Start. (The label ironically has the "Clip" clipped off the front of it.) The camera will only see objects between the Clip Start and End. The default value is 5000mm, and with the default Field of View (45º), it shows about 16 baseplates left to right on my 1920x1080 screen or roughly 13 feet / 8 meters of width. I'd start by adding a zero to the Clip End value. Bumping this up should bring your model into view and shouldn't hurt performance.

The viewport camera starts clipping at around 10,000mm away from the model, and I don't think there's a setting to change that. At that distance on my screen I'm just in view of 32 baseplates / 27 feet / 16 meters. If you're looking from this far out, you can switch in the View menu to [Ortho] and one of the Front/Top/Left/Right views. This should allow you to scale your model down enough to see it in the Viewport. If you rotate your view though, you may see clipping again.

Actually no I cant see the model in the camera initially 😦 At this point I'm about ready to pay someone to do it.

Or try to fake it in photoshop?

It's a simple 4 color (1 base layer of bricks with the logo on the next layer in 3 color) logo that just needs a little perspective and a nice glossy plastic render.

If someone is interested in popping this out for me before monday, I will happily pay you 😃
