Export the model as STL. That is a format commonly used by 3D printers. There has been numerous successful attempts at printing from mecabricks including mine.

If you have a big print, how would you crop it. Is there a way, or do you just have to make it smaller?

Is the design supposed to look blank when downloaded?

If I'm not mistaken, that's how STL files work. From Wikipedia:

STL files describe only the surface geometry of a three-dimensional object without any representation of color, texture or other common CAD model attributes. The STL format specifies both ASCII and binary representations.

If you want color information, you can export to a different standard. If you're using Blender, the .zmbx format carries the most information.
