The drop box is split in 2 sections. The first section is for references images and the second one for ready to use decoration files.

Reference Section

  • Format of images shall be png or jpg and the size shall not be more than 10MB.
  • Files posted shall mainly be scanned images (e.g. sticker sheets) or photos of printed pieces. Ensure that photos are taken perpendicularly to the decoration.
  • Materials posted here will be used to manually generate decorations and therefore blurry images, skewed images or images with low resolutions will be deleted.
  • Any registered user can decide to work on decorations and can add their name to the list of drawers. Multiple drawers can work on a same file.
  • Only file owner and users with decoration rights are allowed to add some notes. It can be helpful to give more indications about what is on the file. e.g. LEGO or bricklink references and names.
  • This is recommended to stitch together multiple images of a same part instead of posting multiple files. For example if you take 2 photos for the front and back of a minifig torso, stitch them together instead of posting 2 files.
  • Ensure that the filename is short and descriptive as this is used for the item title. e.g. "Sticker 60144.png" for the sticker sheet of set 60144.

Decoration Section

  • Only decoration files ready for Mecabricks shall be posted in this section. It could be a decoration map, a bump map or a metalness map.
  • Add a note to help us identify the part. Bricklink/LEGO references, links, etc.
  • You can write a note to give more indications about the decoration. For example if the decoration shall be used with other maps like a bump map or a metalness map.
  • Notes will also be used to let you know what shall be updated if the file is unsuitable.
  • Only users with decorations right can process decoration files.
  • Custom decorations are not allowed. Stickers and printed parts shall have appeared at least in one official physical set.

For more information about how to draw decorations, see this post.

File Upload

  • Only users with a verified account can upload files in the drop box.
  • Make sure that you are in the appropriate section before uploading your file (references or decorations).

Decoration Checklist

  • File resolution: It shall be similar to the size of the uv map template. If you wish to use a different resolution, explain the reason in the note section.
  • Colour values: Colour values shall be the same as the ones stated in the colour chart provided.
  • Positioning: Decoration shall be aligned correctly with the uv map template provided.
  • Bump Map: If decoration is a sticker, you shall upload a bump map as well. If your decoration re-uses a bump map already in the part database, write down the reference in the note section.
  • Metalness map: If background of decorated parts is pearlescent, metal or chrome and/or if decorated areas include metal paint (334, 335, 336, 337), you shall also upload a metal map.
  • Edges: Edges of decoration, bump map and metalness map shall be antialiased.

Mecabricks Decoration Gurus

Here is a list of the users with rights on the decorated part library. These guys are kind enough to give a bit of their time to help Mecabricks. Remember that the only one you can abuse if something is wrong is me. Hopefully not too often!

This looks incredibly helpful for non-admin users to help contribute to Mecabricks; thank you!
A couple of quick questions: for the references section, do we have to create the reference images ourselves (scan, take photo, etc.), or is it a place where, for example, decent images from Bricklink (such as sticker sheets) could be put for easy access?
Do the file names of the decorations have to be the final ones seen in the parts library, or is something like "part #### [enter print here]" acceptable?
Thirdly, how do we update an image if it is declared faulty?

Yay! Thank you Scrubs! I'm glad that you can submit them for approval too, good idea. 😃

Should we have some sort of set and/or part cataloging method for organizing the uploads? It could get really cluttered soon if we don't have that. 😉

Ideally with our good sized group of part admins, we should process stuff pretty quickly. As of right now I think everything in the decorations category has been marked with errors or is awaiting a new part before it can be applied.

Although references might get clogged...

It's really only the reference page that needs it I think.

Other things that would be good is to enable notifications for notes, and maybe an option to sort out reference and decal submissions by user.

I guess that reference images can be anything as long as it is good enough. Bricklink files are never good enough though.
File name is not important it is only to quickly know what it is. You can add more information in the note section.
Final name will be given by admin.

I am coding a file replace function right know as well as notifications for notes. It shall be available later today. You will be able to replace your file according to admin comments and leave a new note. Admin will get a notification and do the second review.

Thanks Scrubs, Just like everything else in Mecabricks this is also simple and clean. I agree with Masman8675 that notifications and cataloging would be good additional features.

New update of dropbox is online. It includes:

  • Confirmation popup before deleting a file.
  • Notifications for new notes - Sent to the file owner and other people who added notes.
  • A new 'Replace' item in the tool panel. It allows users to update their decoration files if admins found stuff that had to be corrected. Remember to add a note to say that you updated the file so that admins are aware.

What exactly is the drop box for?

It's to upload references. If you have the brick decorations in real life, then you can take pictures of it and upload them under "references". These can be used to create the decoration and add the decoration to the workshop. Alternatively, if you have done the work and the decoration is ready to be added, then you can also add it under "decorations". It will be checked and added if good enough. You can also upload bump maps and so on in the "decorations" folder.

Wow! That's pretty cool. Thanks for the info!

Hey Scrubs! I have a question. What exactly does the UV map look like? This is something I was curious on because I would like to know how it is done on Mecabricks parts.

See the uv map section of this tread: https://www.mecabricks.com/en/forum/topic/630

The drop box is cool for adding designs and all, but what about pieces? How do we implement more pieces into the program for building our projects?
For example the program doesn't have this part that I can find... LegoMinifig, Neck Bracket with 4 Angled Handles. Item No: 36452. But it does have this part... LegoTechnic, Pin Connector Round with 4 Clips Item No: 90202 Alternate Item No: 15646 While this Mecabricks program is awesome, I still think it needs more pieces. There are allot missing that would make for a more vast array of projects if we had more parts to work with.

@Drazimov If you have modeled a piece, you can contact Scrubs using the Contact Us button at the bottom of this web page. Scrubs has modeled almost every single part for the Workshop. That is at least a couple hundred different pieces. He is still actively modeling more parts, you will probably just have to be patient or you could add your request to the Missing Parts topic here (https://www.mecabricks.com/en/forum/topic/50).

@ Samino. Thank you. That helps. I just didn't know where or how to submit part ideas.

@Drazimov No problem! 😉

What resolution does the image have to be in?

No special resolution. It has to be sharp and big enough to see perfectly all the little details

How do I make a metal/bump map?
