Export to other 3D formats

Two new export functions are now available for members.

  • STL: geometry only. It's the format generally used by 3D printers.
  • Wavefront OBJ: one mesh for each part, materials and textures. It's a good format to use with other 3D software to do a realistic rendering for example.
  • Collada DAE: Support geometry instances and keep transformation matrices for each part.

Go to the File menu in the workshop and select Export….
A new window will open where you can choose the export format and a few other options.

However, it could be disabled if you are using a browser that doesn't support some of the functions used like Safari.
With Chrome and Firefox, it downloads the files correctly.

Keep in mind that the files can be pretty heavy quickly. ~100Mb for a 2000 parts model. However as everything happens in your browser, you don't download it from the mecabricks server which makes it quick to retrieve.

OBJ exporter generates a zip file that contains the *.obj and *.mtl files as well as a "decorations" folder that includes the png images used as textures. Collada format also includes decoration files.

I never tried with Edge so I am not too sure what the issue could have been.

When exporting as a .obj file. I looks strange in MODO. Is there any tricks to get it to show up in MODO as expected.

@eistrom What do you mean by strange?
You shall try the collada format. Way more efficient. Most of the renders from Renderbricks are made with modo.

Perfect . Thanks Scrubs.. It works perfect now.

You are welcome 😉

Cannot thank you enough for posting this

is there a way to export the models as .lrd or .lxf?

no.

@Scrubs if you have the time could you please make a function where you export as .obj with the textures already on the piece.
PS: How did you make the uv maps because I want to put decoration on a LEGO minifig head. If you made it through Blender could you please send me a .blend file with uv maps of the parts 3626v2, 3814, 3815, 20932, 20926. And is there a way to dual mold parts in Blender? Because I want to dual mold pieces 40925, 65072. Is there a way to have the dual molded parts of the piece exported as texture?
Thanks so much.

Hello, I'm trying to export my Legos but with JPG textures rather than PNG to avoid inconvenient transparencies for DSMax or SketchUP, is there this possibility, thank you in advance.

No. Textures are only available as PNG as transparency channel is used to mix the material nodes.
