Low Res Exports/Hundreds of materials
macstrat started this discussion in Model Export and Render

Hello,
I just started using Mecabricks, and have run into some issues exporting models to blender: namely, they are either very low poly or they have hundreds of materials. Both of these are issues as I am trying to import into Unreal 5. Is there something I am missing?

If I export as OBJ or DAE, the models export with a dozen or two materials, but the mesh is VERY low poly, these are too low it seems to look good in Unreal

If I export as ZMBX, the resolution is fantastic, but it seems to export one material for each brick resulting in hundreds of duplicate materials. When I import these into unreal, it compiles thousands of material files which takes forever.

Meshes are the same with OBJ and DAE (although they are triangulated). On your first screenshot normals are not smoothed: Object -> Shade Smooth
The addon for Blender which uses the zmbx format is about rendering. Hence the materials are made to fit this requirement. They are instanced per part type per colour(s). No way around that as they contain normal maps, bump maps, etc.
