I really like this idea because personally, I couldn't get mecaface for the longest time and I couldn't think of another way to animate faces (which is very useful). The only problem is I'm not sure how Citrine would make a basic version of the face rig. There isn't very much that you can take away from a face rig to make it free or make a basic version. My advice would be to follow Citrines tutorials on how to make a 2d face rig because it is rather simple to follow and the rig is easy to make, but I do advise purchasing Mecaface if you can, it is a very well crafted addon and it is really easy to use with premade poses for the face.
