so when I download the render it downloads not as a png but as a zip file can someone help me with how to download it as a png.
You can't; renders are always exported in zipped folders. Once you've downloaded the folder, you can right-click to unzip it and convert it to a regular folder, so that you can extract your image.

I am having some problems, what do you right click on to unzip it? anytime I try to unzip it it just says that I have to buy WinZip. How do I get past this?
