Parent to Empty
GoldenBrickStudios started this discussion in Help and Tips

Hello Everybody,

Is there a way that I can parent an object to a empty? I am sure it is possible but am not aware of how to do it.
Thank You

Could you be more specific. 😕

What do you mean by parent to empty. You want to have a group in the Workshop that is empty?

@CustomLegoBrick-

As it relates to parenting, you can think of an Empty as a special type of Group that has an origin point. Here's the definition according to the Blender manual:

The “empty” is a single coordinate point with no additional geometry. Because an empty has no volume and surface, it cannot be rendered. Still it can be used as a handle for many purposes.

So if you Group a bunch of parts, you can multi-select all the parts and then move them. But if they are parented to an Empty instead, you can simply grab the Empty and move that. This is especially powerful in animation nodes, since you cannot manipulate Groups but you can manipulate Empties.

Assuming that you have an Empty and an Object (or objects) that you wish to parent:

Option A:

  1. Select your Object(s)
  2. Select the Set Parent button on the left sidebar
  3. Select the Empty

Option B:

  1. Select your Object(s) in the Graph tab
  2. Click and drag your Object(s) into the Empty
