GF24, Though yes, he was referring to the slaves fighting for “the enemy" why is it any different?

Also, It is true that Key did, in-fact, represent some slaves in lawsuits to obtain their freedom and even freed some of his own slaves, he was also strongly against the abolitionist movement, (confusing right?) and in the case U.S. v. Reuben Crandall he sought to have Crandall hanged, for possessing abolitionist pamphlets.

And it’s also worth noting that at the time that the anthem was written, the poem that proclaims the U.S the “land of the free and home of the brave", Key himself, still owned slaves.
Think about that.
So, see it as you may, it is quite a contradicting and confusing story to say the least, but definitely an interesting one.
