Lighting tips

So I'm having a great deal of trouble getting low-lit and somewhat low-lit scenes to render well. I wasn't having much luck with lamps until I tried Sun, but even with that I'm not getting stellar results.

The HDRI is the last one (light box with black square, exposure 1.0)
The lamp is set to sun, size 0.1, strength 4.0, length 50mm

Any ideas on how I can keep the lamp on and not have gray spots all over my image?

Thanks

I've been having some success with point lamps acting as sunlight, as well as HDRI's with area lamps set to portals in indoor scenes. If you host your scene maybe i can take a quick look.
