I've been messing around in the workshop lately and doing some stuff and i have noticed a function called 'volumetric box'. What does this do?

Volume scattering inside the box. For online rendering only.

Thanks! But what does it do? what advantage is there in having one?

Very simply put, a volumetric box is essentially a box-shaped cloud of smoke, fog, or dust. Its advantage is that it literally adds atmosphere to a scene, giving you atmospheric perspective, light blooms, and an all-around cinematic effect to a render.
