Animating Tread Tracks (like real life LEGO tread pieces)

Is there a way to get a line of connected track elements like in the Ninjago Dirt Bike set to move physically like it does in Blender?

Type blender animation tank tracks in Google and you shall find heaps of tutorials.

My issue is preventing the stretch part.
