Follow the development of the future player here. Mecabricks patrons on Patreon can already have access to all these development versions.

Here is the current work in progress version with support for lights, shadows and compositing options.

Seeing the various posts on Twitter. Aren't those new things a bit over-engineered? 😛

That is how things are going forward, otherwise we would still be playing 8-bit video games.
When it will become standard on Mecabricks, you will find the old version ugly.

After a month of hard work, I finally completed my demo model based on set 70672 Cole's Dirt Bike. It is available here for everybody to try. From a concept I started a couple of months ago I am now close to the production version. I don't believe that any of the other 3D software currently provide this visual quality. Now the next step is to implement all of this in the workshop as well as the whole Mecabricks eco-system - Blender add-ons, online render mode, etc.

Here is a list of what will be possible with the new system:

  • Fake bevels
  • Mould lines and engraving for all parts
  • Knobs, tubes and pins are not part of the shell geometry anymore and can be substituted at render time
  • LEGO logo on studs of multiple types
  • Parametric surface finish (real roughness)
  • Base materials of any decorated or multi-material parts can be changed
  • Realistic speckle and glitter materials
  • Eevee support for Mecabricks add-on
  • Custom lighting, shadows and post-processing available to customise the models in the 3D player.

@Scrubs
Any idea when this new system will be ready for everyone? And, maybe more important, is there some repetitive/tedious updating task the community might help with?

Short video of the custom decoration configurator that will ship with the new part manager being developed.

That is really impressive. It is so realistic with the small crease type thing on the legs and the lego copyright printing on all the bricks. I am always amazed by mecabricks.

New video to show the latest development of the part manager. This is a presentation of a section which is mainly for myself but I am also putting a lot of work into it to make it nice and easy to use. After updating a few parts, it looks better than I imagine at the start. The new format requires lots of textures and metadata and this tool will allow to create and tweak stuff very easily. I probably have to spend another one or two weeks on it to complete this app that I started two months ago.

Will users be able to create their own custom configurations, or does that only work for decorations at the moment?

No, configurations are really only to be handled by part admins. There are the root core of the system. Decoration admins and general users can only load them to create decorated elements.

OK, thanks for the clarification and fast response.

Edit: I also have a few more questions:
Will dual-moulded part colours be able to be changed in the workshop, or do they need to be created in the part manager first?
Will users be able to buy more storage, or will they be limited to the free storage?
Will official decorations be able to be used on custom parts without being downloaded and uploaded to user’s custom texture libraries first?
Will custom parts only be able to be used by their creators, or will they be able to be used by other users as well?
Thanks

Will it be again possible to have boundaries by default in the player? I suppose the point is the new system, but until all the parts are switched over, models still look better with boundaries. i.e.

Boundaries are almost invisible on converted elements and they are a performance killer. Long calculation time and double the number of 3D objects. I prefer to have the default setting low enough for most devices to open the models. I know that some people like having them. My idea is to get the possibility to save the settings per device in the future.

Got it! 😉

Would it be possible to enable it on the thumbnails alone as standard? I realized that's where it can make a model look more attractive.

Thumbnails are generated from the screenshot taken when you save the model. This screenshot is always taken with the boundaries.
