Hi there,
Checking out Mecabricks again after a long hiatus. I want to learn how to make nice renders in Blender. Over the past few weeks I picked up BrickLink Stud.io and made a few vignettes. Tonight I imported one to set up a test render, but some parts are positioned and rotated wrong.
Here's a render I did with Studio: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4vufvr6t900ftb3/bikevignette1.png?dl😮
Here's what it looks like when I import to Mecabricks: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d6kr8ju3bc6qutz/mecabricks-screen.jpg?dl😮
Is this a known issue, and is there a fix?
thanks so much!
Tim
We have not entered conversion data for all bricks yet. That's the case for the wrong positions and rotations.
Let me know the brick ids of the bricks and I'll fix them right away.
We have been working on entering conversion data the past year, but it's quite a lot to maintain it. 😉
No worries, I know it's a lot of work. I'll aim to get the brick IDs in the coming days/weeks. Or if this works for you, I've just made the model public:
https://mecabricks.com/en/models/GVjKJgK32nz
Let me know if you're able to get the necessary info from that. The bicycle is missing too.
thanks,
Tim
I made a corrected version of your import here if you want to play with it or export it: https://www.mecabricks.com/en/models/1XjdPedoj8b
When you open the model in the workshop and go in render mode, you can see the settings I used to make the image below. It took 2min40 to render this HD version on Mecabricks. It looks a bit better than the stud.io version 😋
Thanks so much! Tried to get this into Blender again. I loaded template.blend, and imported the Mecabricks .dae, and got a window full of errors that disappeared before I could get a screenshot.
Blender makes me feel stupid. I know I'll get it eventually, but getting started sure is rough. Seems like more time and patience are required. 😃
The latest version of my addons for blender are now using another custom format that I developped especially for this. Choose zmbx when you export. There is a pdf file in the addon zip archive to help.
Hi Scrubs,
Trying to install the latest version of the add-on, and I can't seem to get it to work following the steps in the PDF. Running Blender 2.79 on Mac. I select the mecabricks.zip file from /Blender Lite/3.0.4/, click Install Add-On from File. Then there's no way I can "tick the box," because the Mecabricks add on doesn't show up in the list. I tried filtering for Import-export, and by supported level, but it doesn't appear.
Once for some reason "mecabricks' did appear in the Add Ons menu, but there was some message about scripts being missing. I keep trying, but don't know how to make it work.
It appears I have the latest version of Blender, and I re-downloaded the add-ons. Searched to see if anyone else on Mac was having similar issues but didn't see anything. Sorry to keep asking on this front, but I'd really love to figure this out.
thanks,
Tim
Hello,
3.0.4 is for Blender 2.80 only.
If you use Blender 2.79, you shall use version 2.0.7
However, I just made a major update on mecabricks yesterday mainly focused on file handling and file format. As a result, files exported as .dae for the older addon 2.0.7 for Blender 2.79 needs a tiny change to rework again. I will update it tonight. If you use Blender 2.80 and the new version 3.0.4 which requires a zmbx file exported from the workshop, no problem.
Hi Scrubs,
OK, Blender 2.80 successfully installed the add-on and I imported the file. Now I'll re-watch the video tutorial for the render. I noticed that textures (in this case, a simple classic smiley) didn't import with.
thanks,
Tim
It actually does, but you have to be in the right mode in the viewport 😉
The main 4 modes are: Wireframe, Solid, LookDev and Rendered.
Default is Solid but this one doesn't display the final materials hence the lack of textures. Instead it is using a very simplified version with only a few parameters to tweak (color, Metallic and roughness). This mode is intended for people to work on your meshes, animation, etc.
Keep in mind that the materials I created are pretty complex and therefore, they will likely fail to load in the real time engines like the lookDev mode or eevee. This is mainly true for decorated elements.
To get the most of it, you need to make sure that Cycles Render engine is selected. You can then use the Rendered mode to get a preview of what you might get. Then when you are happy, hit F12 to start the real render with the final parameters.
Tip: Make sure that you select an environment map to easily and quickly light your final scene. If you don't you'll get a funny pink color which means in Blender that a texture is missing.
Hi There,
I was wondering if you could bring kit fisto's parts into the mecabricks workshop? I have been wanting to do a cool render with him for a while.
