Grouping parts
Stephan3321 started this discussion in Bug Reporting

When you grouped a selection of parts and later group a build that include the smaller group, the bricks in the smaller group will be de-grouped (for instance: a cabinet in a house. The Cabinet is grouped. Later you want to group the house + cabinet, but then the Cabinet group will be empty). Couldn't it automatically become a sub-group?

Make sure that the group is locked or that you selected it and not the individual parts only.

Can someone help me figure out how to use the new group update? Cuz I can’t figure out how to add more than 1 brick to a group.

I am still having a bit of trouble as well. Groups unfold, but don't always fold-in when you press the >.
Non-grouped bricks are also in de list making it very loooong. Something goes wrong on the top of the list, only the eye and key lock symbol are shown there. Dragging a brick from the end of the list into the correct group takes a loooong time as well.

Could you give me an example? I don't have any reports regarding group opening/closing issues. Maybe it is because they are empty? 😛
What do you mean by "Something goes wrong on the top of the list"? Parts are organised alphabetically in a group or the scene. User doesn't have any control over it. Only sub-groups that are always located at the top can be sorted.

@UnionPacific4014 Use drag and drop. You can select multiple element using CTRL+Click or SHIFT+Click

I’m using an IPad, Scrubs. That wouldn’t work

Yes, it is what I was thinking. Touchscreens are a pain. I always have to do the work twice as the workflow and coding methods are different. I may add buttons in the future to move the selection to a group if I find a nice and pretty way to add them without destroying the UI or recode everything.

Ok, sounds good Scrubs!

@Scrubs, I will take some screenshots when I'm out of the hospital again and able to move.

@Stephan3321 Sorry to hear that. Doesn't sound like fun. Get well soon.

Well it sounds worse then it is I guess: torn cruciate ligaments and meniscus.
Thank you! I'll be back in business in no time.

That sounds good

The first problem where only the eye and keylock symbols were visible, is now solved. The other problem I still have is dragging sub-groups into groups. This video explains my problem:

It takes a looooong time to drag the sub-groups from below to the top of the list.

The new grouping system is frustrating. It won't let me make groups or put bricks into groups. And is it really necessary to have the serial numbers of the bricks in it? I mean it'd work for coloring or getting specific bricks from a group, I can understand if it's to make it easier, but it's not when you don't know the serial numbers are! I can't work with this!

What are you talking about? Groups are created exactly the same way as before. NOTHING at all has changed on this side. And now you can even use drag and drop to re-organise everything. There is always a reason for what I design. I don't do it for the sack of changing... and improvements are made all the time.

@Stephan3321 Which browser do you use? It is definitely not that slow here. For whatever reasons, all browsers do not allow to use the mouse scroll while the drag and drop API is active. It is really weird and I do not understand why. So basically I had to design from scratch the code to handle this auto scrolling up or down depending on where the mouse is.

@Scrubs, I use the latest version of Chrome.

The grouping still works good. Most difficult thing is that selected bricks cannot be added through the cog wheel anymore, but these parts have to be dragged into the group. In my case dragging goes slow and the non-grouped parts kind of make it look messy. Took me a good 20 minutes to fix the groups on my Hidden Side Fire Truck.

When copying a group with sub-groups, the names are not copied with it.
And perhaps you could add an option to extend the grouping window? Right now I am not using the Object/Move/Transform section, but the Grouping window cannot be enlarged.

I'm saying it's not letting me group anything & it's annoying to have all these number codes representing LEGOs! I have many group folders & it won't let me scroll up to place a brick into a folder!

Try click & drag. That's how it worked whenever I use the workshop.

My only question is how do you add pieces to groups on a touchscreen? That’s the whole reason I commented on this page in the first place!
