Mecabricks for Commercial Use?
Krisego started this discussion in Help and Tips

After posting a comment on how outdated a Lego realism tutorial for Blender on YouTube was, I received the following response: "...said, mecabricks doesn't have an open source or creative commons license, so you can't use their stuff in much outside of just renders, especially not for commercial use" -rioforce. Is this true?

Hello Mike
Until the instruction builder comes to life, it is probably the only solution. However the current license doesn't allow the use of Mecabricks for commercial purposes. You can send me an email with more information and we can have a look at that.

@scrubs, thank you for the quick reply! I’ll draft up a detailed email today.

Hello, looking to reach out in order to discuss using mecabricks builder to create models for a LEGO based music video. Should my team and I reach out via e-mail or which way is best to contact?

As long as it is not commissioned and free to access yes.

whats the best free program to use to animate with mecabricks 3d models

Blender is the program of choice here. It is free and you can download the mecabricks add-ons to get the full support of all the material options with no work involved. That said any other software can be used and great work is posted online using these. E.g max, modo, Maya, cinema etc.

Hello. Thanks for such a great work. It took me a week building and animating several Lego mini figures by myself. Later I found out about Mecabrics and it saved a lot of time.
I have a legal question.
I am working on an animation which I will post on YouTube. As far as I understand that is totally legal. So here are the questions;

  1. Am I allowed to share the short film blender source files with Mecabricks models included for free? In the description I will underline that some of the 3d models are property of Mecabricks?
  2. Am I allowed to create a course about making short films and sell it if some models are presented in the footage? I dont think I will reach this point 😃 but there is a chance.

Thank you.

Hello. YouTube is generally ok even if monetised if you credit Mecabricks.com properly and that it is not a commission.

However redistributing Mecabricks assets is strictly prohibited by the license. You can not sell or redistribute files containing Mecabricks assets.

The general license also enforces the use of the Mecabricks platform for non commercial project only. As it is, you can use it to create free courses only (without providing the asset files). For commercial use we must have an agreement in place. Do not hesitate to send me an email if you wish to discuss it further.

Hello,

Thank you for your prompt answer. It is now 99% clear for me what are the terms 😃. I will indeed contact you when i complete my YouTube video (oh god I hope I will) to clarify the left 1%.

Cheers

Hello, I did not know where to post this comment, in the forum many topics are publicity, and if someone could remove them I would like to

can my own renders be used to create calendars with hoffmann?

hello

could I sell the images that exported from the workshop?

Just out of curiosity, why are commissions not allowed?

Because I spent 10 years of my life working on Mecabricks 😉

Hello, where can I read the actual license?

I was not able to find it anywhere, aside from the General License at the paid blender plugin shop page? But this license does not mention user-generated content, unless I am reading something wrong. And there is nothing shown when I export the files? I also can't find anything in the Workshop?

I just created a new account to check if there is a license agreement shown to accept and there seems not to be anything?

I know this is not the intent, but it kinda looks like there is literally nothing that disallows people to use Mecabricks for commercial purposes, aside from this forum topic.

But I'd like to know the intent. Specifically regarding the blender plugin. Since it is a paid product, can it be used to make cover pages for paid instructions?

Cheers
Jerac

Hello, The first time you export a model from the workshop, you have to agree to the end user license agreement which specifies among other things that models exported cannot be used for commercial purposes.

The licenses for the addons are for the addons only. The fact that some addons are paid products doesn’t waive the Mecabricks eula for exported models. People usually get in touch with me to sort something when their use intent is out of the general license.

Everything will be made much clearer in the next version of the platform.

@Scrubs I'm making something using mecabricks I want to put it up online but I will not make money from it, so does that work?
