Link Materials to Meshes Causing Incorrect Material Types
Masman8675 started this discussion in Model Export and Render

Hi all, I just imported a model (for an update render of this) and I ran across the problem below:

As you can see, things are definitely not as they should be. For example, in between the road stripes the material is white when it should be dark grey; on the roof there's pearlescent cheese slopes that should be black; several black coloured parts that should be yellow, white, orange, and red; red headlights; etc.

No other settings are changed, just the Link Materials to Meshes option.

Does link materials to meshes simply assign the same material to all instances of a mesh? (I've never used it)
That seem to be what has happened with your model, in which the first instance has determined the color for the rest of the instances. Like the cheese slopes on the top have determined the material for what should be the headlights.

To use "Link Materials to Meshes", you need to export from Mecabricks with the option "group by geometry and colour".

@UmbraManis Yes this is what happens if you use "Group by geometry" in Mecabricks with the option "Link Materials to Meshes" in Blender.

This is an advanced user option only needed for big models. It is longer to import in Blender however, it will decrease the scene preparation time before rendering and decrease the amount of memory required - can be useful for GPU rendering. For small models like this one and for a single frame, there aren't much benefit.

Oh! Yup, that would be why. Well, I now know what happens if you don't select Group by Geometry and Colour... 😛

@Scrubs Checking the Link Materials to Meshes box is necessary, I have two of these as well as Road Hog, so it's bigger than can be seen from the pictures. 😉
