How to pose/animate a cape?
R33l_Just1ce started this discussion in Help and Tips

I’m new to blender and the only way I can think of to pose capes for a mini figure is to use proportional editing, but it is not very easy and is not at all natural looking. I’m wondering what the optimal technique is for posing and even keyframe animating a Lego cloth element is. Your help is much appreciated!

I would gladly read a good answer as this is something I have been trying for a while without getting good results.

The simplest way to achieve this is to make a basic shape roughly wrapping the minifig, use it as a collider, and set up the cape as a "Cloth" in the physics properties panel. After some time working with the cloth settings, I think you can quickly get what you want. I watched some good tutorials on youtube by the past, I think you can find them too easily.

Sorry to not show some example, but my laptop died three weeks ago (it fall from a chair), and my last backup with it.

Just a tips:

  • use the cloth presets, denim and leather are quite good
  • double check your pinning vertices, on the neck and all elements on which the cloth is fixed on

Pinning is very important.

P.S.: I used this technic for the scarf on this one: https://www.flickr.com/photos/othelarian/15147068615/in/dateposted-public/
