Tip about group origin point.
Sealund started this discussion in Help and Tips

I've found out that the first part selected when creating a group will set the group origin point. Perhaps this is already wide known among all Mecabrickers out there, but i'll just post this anyway! 😉

You can always change the origin point of a group in the object properties in the right panel, but it will only be for the current session. Next time you load your saved model the origin point will be not be the one you choosed and set, it will be the first one when you created your group.

So my tips is, when you create a group and want to set the default origin point to a specific part, just select only that part first and create a group of it alone. Then select all other parts you want in the same group and add them to the group by clicking the gearwheel and choose add!

This will make the default origin point to always be the one that you first selected and made the group of!

Thanks Sealund, I was under impression that the origin points are saved across sessions, you are right they aren't.

I thought so too when Scrubs launched the function but found out that it's alot more codeing to get it saved, guess it might be in the todo list but my little workaround is quite easy to live with! 😉

Hi, I was wondering if this idea could be revisited. I went through one of my models which consists of several robots, and each robot has several limbs. I went through and set the origin for each limb and sub-limb to make posing easier. When I reloaded the model, all the origins got reset.

Yes, this is a problem. As i wrote in my first post you can choose which part to include the origin point for a group but unfortunately you can't set and save a specific origin point for a part. It will always reset the origin to the same snap point of a part when you load your model.
I have mentioned this to Scrubs earlier and i think he told me that it's nothing that can be fixed easily. I know he's busy right now with the new flexible part editor but there is nothing to lose on raising the issue again if you feel like it. 😃

This is currently only valid for a session.
It doesn't seem like it but it is a complicated one to solve for me. I would need to change significantly the way models are saved which will break backward compatibility. This means that I will need another process when older files are loaded. Nothing impossible but everything which touches to the files is a bit delicate. No errors allowed.

Understood, thanks for the info! I know you are working on higher-priority things that will be more generally useful.
