How do you zoom out in Blender?

A 2-ft plane IRL shouldn't be the size of the sun in Blender! Help!

Mousewheel or CTRL + middle button + move mouse

Scrolling just rotates the view. (Which, I'll admit, is pretty neat.) I'll have to try the other next time I gather enough enthusiasm to try Blender again.
