is there a way to pan up/down/left/right in the workshop without rotating? let me know if this question belongs in a certain thread. Although, come to think of it, it might be to late by then.

how would that be done on a trackpad?
You shall be able to configure your trackpad to have a right click then use a second finger to drag the view.
