Yes, I should rather have written "in addition to" instead of "instead". 😉 One option would be
"Part_[MB part number]_[consecutive number]", e.g. "Part_42022d4_00001"
Is it ok if the end number is the overall number and not the count of a particular piece type?
Yes, an overall numbering would be fine, so it could also read something like "Part_[consecutive number]_[MB part number]".
This feature would really, really help A LOT to make selections in Blender. Selecting certain parts in larger models is currently my biggest headache. I'd like to amend my suggestion as follows: The color should be added as well, so
[part number][color][consecutive number], e.g.
