Parts should import with part numbers...

...instead of consecutive numbers into Blender. This would allow for searching specific parts through scripts (and subsequently apply certain properties to these).

Parts need to have a different name for Blender. So if you tell me how you would like the names to be built I can see what I can do.

Yes, I should rather have written "in addition to" instead of "instead". 😉 One option would be

"Part_[MB part number]_[consecutive number]", e.g. "Part_42022d4_00001"

Is it ok if the end number is the overall number and not the count of a particular piece type?

Yes, an overall numbering would be fine, so it could also read something like "Part_[consecutive number]_[MB part number]".

This feature would really, really help A LOT to make selections in Blender. Selecting certain parts in larger models is currently my biggest headache. I'd like to amend my suggestion as follows: The color should be added as well, so

[part number][color][consecutive number], e.g.

11215_LtBluishGrey_3
