Add matte shader option for minifig wigs and arms
wlange started this discussion in Suggestions and Ideas

I found that when setting the "Roughness" in the Blender nodes to ~0.2 for minifig wig and arm materials, respective renderings appear by far more realistic, because in fact these parts are less reflective/shiny than others due to their rougher surface. Hence it would perhaps make sense to add a "Rough" checkbox to the "Colours" pane in the Workshop (on by default for wigs, arms and possibly other parts, where this applies to) and export these materials to additional Blender shaders. This would also require an update of the Blender Template.

I understand that it would not be that easy for sloping bricks, as in this case only some faces of a part are rougher than others.

Those, who want even more realism for their minifig renderings could use a bump map instead, such as suggested in the Rioforce blog post under https://rioforce.wordpress.com/2013/06/29/good-ol-johnny/#more-694

You are right, some parts are more or less rough than others which affects the way the light is reflected, scattered, diffused etc. Adjusting the roughness parameter in Blender is a good start and it is the reason I put it in my custom nodes. However, it is too much work to define for each part what this parameter shall be. I observed thousands of bricks and even for a same design - probably depending on the mould version - the surface finish can be different. I prefer to let people choose the value they prefer.

Surface finish of sloping bricks (and the like) are different though. I hope that one day I'll be able to display them even in the workshop.
