Works on iPad
Leemcg started this discussion in General Discussion

Hi - I'm new here, just stumbled across MECABRICKS whilst on holiday and with only access to my iPad. I just tried starting it up even though every message I'd read said that iPads wouldn't work because they didn't have the right GL thing in the browser. Well since iOS 8 they do, and it works just fine.

I presume that others aren't using iPads because of the lack of discussion here or on eurobricks, but I thought a discussion on what's possible or not might be useful.

I have been able to create new models, saving and opening them with no problems. The rotation works fine with a finger drag and resizing with a double finger drag as you'd expect them to on a tablet. Sometimes I have to touch an element 2 or 3 times to get it to add to the model, and it can be pretty fiddly to choose the face to add new elements to, but it does work.

What I haven't been able to find a way to do is multiple selections, this means that building is slow, and grouping isn't possible.

Even without that functionality, this is going to prove very useful for me: doing full designing on my PC, and then bringing my iPad to my building area.

I have to say though that this blows away what is on the Apple Store for Lego designing. I'd suggest that a simple wrapper into the web interface, with the right keywords would produce an app that could be sold!

A couple of minor other points: it complains that it's not allowed to go full screen in this browser, but there are plenty of other web apps that do that (I use the ft, but there are others). I would think it would be possible to do what the ft does and have MECABRICKS appear as if it's an app.

The biggest challenge that I have is a set of models already done in LDD or LDRAW and no way to convert them across.

Hi there Lee, welcome to "wonderful" mecabricks. 😄

Great to hear you've been able to use Mecabricks on an iPad!
What I'm seeing is when using multiple selections, that you can turn on "multiple selections" - the button, but when you're selecting (moving the finger from left above to right below for example) that nothing happens. (and because of this Grouping isn't possible. )

Being able to convert models into Mecabricks from LDD will probably happen at some kind of stage in the future as it's on the to-do list but don't expect is soonish. It requires a lot of work to be done.

Oh, and the other thing I haven't been able to work out how to do on the iPad is to pan - presume this also takes a modifier to the mouse.

Even though I am anticipating everything being a lot quicker on a full PC using keyboard and mouse, it would certainly be useful to be able to do everything on an iPad even if that meant a few more presses - switching from model rotate to model pan, for instance, same for multiple selections.

Hello,

There wasn't any iPad in the house until recently and therefore I couldn't really try. I stole my wife's today and I had a little play around. I basically noticed the same as what you wrote in your first post (panning works fine though. Just slide with 3 fingers).

Multiple selection is the most annoying thing missing. I might try to make it work at some stage as it would make it almost fully functional.

Safari for ios is still a pain for a few things and the fullscreen API is not supported yet (even on macos it is not even fully usable... keyboard is deactivated when in fullscreen mode due to security reason apparently...). Some websites use tricks to make the top bar smaller, but it is not really practical to implement.

The other annoying thing is that most of the time you need a double tap to perform the action. It looks like that if the element has a :hover property, the first tap perform the :hover action and you need a second tap for the actual click.

Except from that, it doesn't look that bad 😉

Brilliant, thanks! Will try the three fingered pan, and look forward to some way to do the multi select in the future.

Just one other thing I've found. Sometimes on the iPad, the working area becomes the full screen, rather than the smaller area to the top left. That means that the model covers the dialogs at the bottom and right. The whole model seems to be a bit scaled then, and you can't really select individual elements.

When this happens reloading the model from File menu doesn't fix things, you have to reload the web page.

I'm not too sure what happens with iOS. I also noticed that sometimes on the model page the 3D viewer keeps extending vertically...

Is there a chance to get an iOS App as well? My question is: it is possible to work with this offline, I only got an WiFi only version, and it would be great to have the entire parts locally stored.

Hi, i’m sorry to up this topic again

I don’t understand how to move a brick on iPad.
Is someone can explain me basic movements on iPad please

Thanks

Hope you will resolve this bug soon !

This online tool looks like awesome 😉

All done. It was long overdue. I fixed the gizmos for touch screens.

It works perfectly !

Thanks for your support 😃

i just wanted to congratulate @Scrubs for the great work on this site, I've tried it on a samsung tablet, with android obviously and it works wonders
Excellent work

👍

Yes! It also, ofcourse, works on my Samsung S7 mobilephone. But it's a little challenge to build something with a small screen but it works!

Excelent work @Scrubs!

Most phones have a resolution too low to include all UI elements and therefore the workshop is screwed up. I am not going to make anything for this however, I am keen to look at stuff for tablets.

I agree with Scrubs as to his decision to not actively support SmartPhones for the named screen size reason (I've been working for years on HCI stuff). Optimizing tablets coming with finger or pen input capabilities seems to make sense to me, though. But of course this requires (time-consuming) testing and user feedback.

I have the "cheap" 2018 iPad and Mecabricks works fine on it.
It depends what kind of LEGO models you want to build. Very large models may not work properly on it.

I have an iPad Air 2 and it works fine.
Some large models could crash sometimes but I can easily work on my iPad with models of 1000-1500 parts 😉

Hi Scrubs

Since the last update, I have troubles on my iPad: when I tried to add a baseplate or import a model including a base plate i have a crash of my browser (reload of actual page)
Have you heard about this bug ?

Thank you
