Import Parts from LDraw to Blender
homer_simpson started this discussion in Suggestions and Ideas

Hi Scrubs,

first MECABRICKS is awsome, thanks for this work.

I see that each part is modeled in Blender by hand: with your guide.
A few years ago, I have written a blender import script for LDraw library parts and put it on github.
Maybe this helps a bit when creating/modeling new parts.

Regards Daniel

Hello,

Thank you for your comment 😉
I'm sure I tried you converter a few years ago. I might give it a go again as the 3ds converter from LDview doesn't work anymore on my new computer. The issue with LDraw parts is that they are not entirely based on real dimensions but on the ldraw unit - 1LDU = 0.4mm. Therefore for example, studs are lower than real ones - 1.6mm instead of 1.8mm - Holes of technic bricks are located 5.6mm high instead of 5.8mm, etc. So parts have to be manually edited. Anyway, it is always a good starting point, especially when I don't own the parts myself!

Hello Scrubs,

interesting, that the LDraw units are not correct, I thought they were correct.
If the converter no longer work with a recent Blender version then simply open an issue in the github repo. If I find some free time I will fix this.
Maybe I can add an option to correct the stud dimension and the technic brick hole position.

Yes, there are quite a few other approximations with the LDraw system, but I guess as long as all the parts are made on the same system it works.

It would be cool to import LDraw parts and re-work them instead of creating all new from sketch, especially for parts with free formed geometry.
